Why Steer Smarts Uses a Spring-Loaded Joint on Our YETI XD Tie Rods and Drag Links

Unlike many factory joints that use a weak or nearly flat spring (or even plastic components that wear quickly), our design maintains constant preload on the bearing surfaces.
This preload does two critical things:
- It keeps the joint incredibly tight with zero slop, delivering a firmer, more responsive steering feel on the road.
- It allows the joint to absorb massive hits—whether you’re slamming into rocks, dropping off ledges, or pushing full articulation—without the bearing surfaces separating or hammering out.
The result? Less deflection, reduced vibration, and dramatically better longevity under the extreme loads that lifted Jeeps with 35s, 37s, or larger tires place on the steering linkage.
Not Just Any Spring — Smart Side-Specific Engineering
We didn’t stop at adding a strong spring. We optimized the entire system for real-world Jeep geometry and performance.
On the driver’s side, our spring-loaded joint works exactly as described above — providing that constant preload for impact resistance and tight, precise steering feel.
On the passenger side, we use a reverse pin (also called our unique “Reverse Pin” or reverse taper technology). This built-in design prevents the linkage from flopping or rocking during extreme articulation. Instead of relying on weak external supports like some competitors, the reverse pin is integrated directly into the socket for rock-solid stability no matter how flexed your suspension gets.
This driver-side spring + passenger-side reverse pin combination is a deliberate engineering choice. It gives you the best of both worlds: maximum durability and impact absorption where the loads are highest, plus anti-flop control exactly where articulation demands it.
